Picking new flooring is one of those decisions that sounds simple until you're actually doing it. Suddenly you're knee-deep in product names, wondering whether hybrid is better than laminate, whether carpet will survive your dog, and whether you're about to spend a lot of money on something that won't hold up.
That's where we come in. We're ALS Flooring Solutions, a family-owned business based in Willawong on Brisbane's southside. We're a young company - but between our team we bring over 30 years of flooring industry experience to every job, from sales and product advice through to installation. We supply and install carpet, hybrid, vinyl, laminate and engineered timber across Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich
Here's the honest, practical guide we'd give you if you walked into our showroom today.
Your Flooring Options - and What They're Actually Good For
There's no single "best" flooring - it really depends on where it's going, who lives in your home, and what you're trying to achieve. Here's how we'd break it down:
Carpet: Carpet gets a bad rap sometimes, but in the right rooms it's hard to beat. Bedrooms especially - there's something about stepping onto soft carpet in the morning that hard flooring just can't replicate. It also adds warmth and reduces noise, which is a big deal if you've got kids running around upstairs or live in an apartment.
The key is choosing the right type.
Wool carpet is beautiful and durable but comes at a price.
Solution-dyed nylon is our go-to recommendation for busy family homes - it's tough, stain-resistant, and holds its colour well over time.
Polyester and polypropylene are more budget-friendly options that still look great.
Hybrid Flooring: Hybrid has become our most popular hard flooring option over the last few years - and for good reason. It's fully waterproof, handles Brisbane's humidity well, looks like real timber, and is genuinely easy to live with day to day. Pets, kids, spills - hybrid takes it all in its stride.
It's also a great choice for open-plan homes because you can run it across multiple areas without worrying about moisture damage near the kitchen or back door. If you're not sure where to start with hard flooring, hybrid is usually our first suggestion.
Vinyl Plank Flooring: Vinyl plank is a step down in rigidity from hybrid but still a very practical, water-resistant option - particularly popular for rental properties and investment homes where durability and easy maintenance matter more than a premium finish. Modern vinyl designs have come a long way and look a lot better than the vinyl flooring of 20 years ago.
Laminate Flooring: Laminate gives you the timber look at a more affordable price point than engineered timber. It's durable and scratch-resistant, which makes it a solid choice for living areas and hallways. The one thing to keep in mind with laminate in Brisbane is moisture - it doesn't love high-humidity areas or rooms prone to wet feet, so we'd steer you away from using it near pools or in bathrooms.
Engineered Timber Flooring: If you want the real thing - the warmth, the texture, the premium look of genuine timber - engineered timber is the way to go. It has a real hardwood veneer on top, which means it looks and feels like solid timber but is more dimensionally stable in our Queensland climate where temperature and humidity fluctuate. It's an investment, but one that can genuinely transform a room and add value to your home.

Choosing Flooring for Brisbane's Climate and Lifestyle
Brisbane's warm, humid climate plays a bigger role in flooring performance than most people realise. A product that performs beautifully in Melbourne can behave very differently here. A few things worth keeping in mind:
Moisture matters: Even if you're not near a pool or bathroom, Brisbane humidity means moisture-resistant flooring is always a safer choice in living areas
Direct sunlight and UV: Queensland homes often get a lot of sun through large windows and sliding doors. Some flooring products fade faster than others, so it's worth asking about UV ratings
Open-plan living: Most Brisbane homes have open-plan layouts that flow from living to kitchen to outdoor areas. You want a flooring product that works across all those zones without issues
Slab vs timber subfloor: Brisbane homes are a mix of concrete slab and elevated timber subfloor construction. The right product and install method depends on what you're working with, which is why a proper measure and assessment matters
This is the kind of thing we assess when we come out for a free measure and quote - it's not just about measuring the room, it's about understanding your home and making sure whatever we recommend will actually perform well long-term.

A Few Tips for Looking After Your New Floor
Good flooring is an investment, and a bit of basic care goes a long way. Sweep or vacuum regularly to stop grit scratching the surface, wipe up spills quickly, use furniture pads under legs, and try to manage direct sunlight where you can with blinds or curtains.
We give care and maintenance advice with every install, specific to the product you've chosen. If you're ever unsure about cleaning products or have a question down the track, whether it's next week or five years after we've installed just give us a call. We're not the kind of business that disappears once the job is done.
Why Professional Installation Makes a Difference
We might be biased here, but we genuinely believe the install is just as important as the product. We've seen great flooring let down by a poor installation - gapping boards, lifting edges, uneven joins - and it's a shame every time.
Our installers have been doing this for a long time. They know how to prep a subfloor properly, how to handle tricky doorways and transitions, and how to get the finish right. Every install we do is backed by a 12-month installation warranty, on top of the product warranty from the manufacturer.
